Chef who refused to put pineapple on pizza branding it an ‘insult to his culture’ loses Aussie workplace claim
An Italian chef in Brisbane was sacked after refusing three times to put pineapple on pizza, calling it a cultural insult, and his unfair dismissal claim was thrown out on a technicality.
The chef refused to put the tropical fruit on the Italian dish, explaining it was an insult to his culture and offensive to him as an Italian.
A Brisbane Italian chef, Davide Tamburella, was dismissed after refusing on multiple occasions to put pineapple on pizza at a function, calling it a cultural insult.
The Fair Work Commission rejected his unfair dismissal claim not on its merits but because he filed the application too late.
Tamburella has since landed on his feet, working as head chef at Don Gino, according to his LinkedIn profile.
If you ever lodge a Fair Work unfair dismissal claim, timing matters, the Commission dismissed this case solely because the application was filed too late.
