China expelled top generals Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli from the Communist Party and military over serious corruption and disloyalty allegations.
Zhang was Xi Jinping's second-in-command on the Central Military Commission and one of very few senior officers with actual combat experience.
The expulsions came days before Xi is due to travel to the US for talks with President Trump, adding to the political significance of the timing.
