Christa Pike, 50, survived two doses of pentobarbital during her execution in Tennessee and was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
A witness said Pike was still conscious and writhing on the gurney before letting out what he described as a joyous laugh and chuckle.
Her lawyer is now urging the governor to commute her sentence, with death penalty experts calling it the worst botched execution in the modern era.
Experts say this is the first time in modern history a person has survived after being injected with lethal execution drugs, making it legally unprecedented.
