Astronomers detect mysterious burst of energy from a galaxy far, far away
Astronomers have detected the most distant fast radio burst ever recorded, a mysterious energy flash that travelled for more than 10 billion years to reach Earth.
Intense flash of radio waves is more than 10bn years old and has travelled through ‘approximately 80% of cosmic history’
Scientists detected a fast radio burst that originated when the universe was only about 3 billion years old, travelling through roughly 80 per cent of cosmic history.
The burst, FRB 20240304B, was first caught by the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa, then traced to its host galaxy using the James Webb Space Telescope.
The host galaxy was young, tiny and rapidly forming stars, and researchers say whatever causes FRBs must be able to occur in these very early cosmic environments.
