James Webb telescope pinpoints the most distant 'fast radio burst' ever seen, more than 10 billion light-years away
The James Webb telescope has pinpointed the most distant fast radio burst ever detected, a mysterious energy explosion from over 10 billion light-years away.
The James Webb Space Telescope has detected the farthest "fast radio burst" ever seen, providing more clues about these mysterious explosions.
Astronomers used the James Webb Space Telescope to identify the host galaxy of the most distant fast radio burst ever recorded, named FRB 20240304B.
The burst originated more than 10 billion light-years away, more than doubling the previous distance record, from a small, star-forming, metal-poor galaxy.
Researchers suggest the burst may have come from a magnetar, and the findings shed new light on the early universe when it was only about 3 billion years old.
The study, published in the journal Science, was co-authored by researchers at the Sydney Institute for Astronomy, putting Australian scientists at the heart of the discovery.
