The head of Australia-listed Viridis Mining has called it paramount to break China's grip on rare earth supply as a Trump-Xi summit looms this week.
China introduced rare earth export controls in April 2025, hitting car industries in the EU, UK, US and Japan, with a suspension deal due to expire after 12 months.
If no deal is struck at the summit, stricter global restrictions could return, pushing up costs for electric vehicles, wind turbines and other products relying on rare earths.
